Breed specific dachshund rescues play a crucial role for several reasons. Overpopulation and the surrender of dachshunds, often due to overbreeding, unplanned litters, death of owner or change in family circumstances, necessitate the work of rescues to ensure these dogs find loving homes. Dachshunds are very attached to their owners and often don’t do well if they are left alone for long hours, neglected or in a shelter environment.
Additionally, dachshunds are prone to specific health issues like intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), requiring specialized care that rescues are equipped to provide, including necessary medical treatment. Behavioral problems, often resulting from neglect, abuse, or lack of training, also make dachshund rescue vital. New Mexico Dachshund Rescue is made up of volunteers who work to rehabilitate these dogs, offering training and socialization to improve adoptability.
We work with overcrowded area shelters by placing dogs in foster homes which frees up space for other homeless pets. Senior and special needs dachshunds are often overlooked in shelters, and we focus on giving these dogs a second chance by placing them with loving fosters and finding adoptive families to give them a second chance. We also work with dachshund owners in need of re-homing, without judgement, to place their dachshund with a new family.
Dachshund specific rescues like NMDR, educate potential and current dachshund owners about the breed’s specific needs, such as exercise requirements, grooming, and health care, ensuring owners are prepared and able to provide the best possible care for their pets.
Our ultimate goal is to help ensure our dogs are matched with the right families for successful, long-term adoptions.
